Happy 90th to 1st Starbeck Guides

In March of 1928 1st Starbeck Guides opened its doors and welcomed girls into the guiding movement in order to experience new challenges and adventures, and the unit is still thriving today.

On 26 March a 90th birthday party was enjoyed by guides who attend the unit today, and also guides and leaders from yesteryear. Janet Thackwray, who led the unit for 25 years, welcomed everyone to the party and showed several photos of her own adventures over the years. These included; camping, outdoor cooking, barging and charity events including a second time around fashion show. Debs Wynn, the current leader, also shared her guiding memories, showing photos of International trips to Mexico, India and Switzerland.

All the current guides shared their reasons on why they enjoyed guides;

“A chance to see all my friends”, “We get to choose what we want to do ourselves” “We have lots of fun”

Margaret Terry, who was a leader in the unit during the 1970s and 80s was asked to cut the cake alongside Beth Thurlow who was celebrating her 13th birthday that day.
